In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the process of ordering an e-chain® cable carrier, covering all the necessary information you need.

Note: If you’re ordering a cable carrier for the first time, we recommend contacting us by telephone, live chat or request a meeting in person or virtually. Our technical representatives can assist you with the order process and provide a recommendation for the cable carrier that best suits your application.

Let’s get started.

If You Have an Existing igus Chain

If you already have an igus chain, we need the part number of your current chain. Note that some igus chains have multiple part numbers required for re-ordering. If you encounter this issue, please refer to our video guide. We aim to make the re-ordering process as smooth as possible, so you don’t have to make multiple visits to the chain or machine which requires you to shut it down.

If you don’t have the correct part numbers, we can still assist you. We will treat it like a new chain, and require some dimensions, which will be addressed below.

Understanding why the cable carrier has broken is also crucial. If the part has lasted over a decade, it’s less of a concern since all chains eventually wear down. However, if it has only been in use for a couple of years, a different chain might be necessary for optimal performance. Informing the inside sales representative about the reason for the cable carrier’s failure and its duration of use will help our technical team provide a long-lasting replacement.

Ordering a New Chain

When ordering a new chain, dimensional sizing is important. We want to be sure it fits in the space you have. Specifically, the outer height, outer width, and curve height of the e-chain are critical measurements. To measure the curve height accurately, measure from the top of the e-chain curve to the very bottom when in a ‘C’ shape.

If your energy chain fits into a trough, consider any width restrictions as well.

The environment where the energy chain operates is another important factor. Temperature (hot or cold), whether it’s used indoors or outdoors, and if it’s exposed to aggressive environments with chemicals that could corrode a metal chain are all good things to know and tell your representative.

The type of cable carrier you need depends on these factors: dimensions, environment, and the reason for the previous chain’s failure (if re-ordering). Our most popular chain is the 2500 in our medium duty E2 series of chains. Versions openable from both the inner and outer radius are available, as well as sibling chains that can be either a half tube or fully enclosed. For more aggressive environments, the E4 series is recommended. The E4 also offers an R4 enclosed tube with a lid for environments with particles or an economical H4 version with a reduced number of crossbars.
