The patented igus dryspin® lead screw technology for the automotive industry – fast and lubrication-free operation
By Marco Thull, edited by Shizu Yamaguchi
Automation in cars is becoming more common while more stringent quality requirements are being applied. Actuators are simultaneously becoming smaller and driven components need to be designed more efficiently.
To drive moving parts or assemblies efficiently and without additional lubrication, more and more customers in the automotive industry are relying on patented dryspin® lead screw technology.
What advantages does dryspin offer?
- Up to 82% higher efficiency due to optimized thread angle
- Quiet and vibration-dampening due to rounded tooth geometry
- Extended service life due to asymmetry
- Customer-specific solutions for lead screw and nuts individually configurable online
- Insensitive to dirt (e.g. very advantageous in exterior areas)
- Lubrication-free (e.g. no disturbing grease in the interior)
- For completely grease-free operation use, stainless-steel or hard anodized aluminium lead screws are combined with high-performance polymers from the proven iglide® product range
- Tested in the igus laboratory

Higher efficiency and less wear
The patented thread geometry was developed by igus in 2015. It offers many advantages compared to conventional high helix threads:
- Larger spaces between the individual threads, resulting in an increased share of the tribologically optimized polymer content in the threads
- More wear-resistant material and higher levels of efficiency are crucial for a service life that is up to five times longer compared to conventional high helix threads
